From University to my foot in the door!

•July 5, 2015 • Leave a Comment

I graduated University in 2013, and I had been trying to find a job in this time that required the degree I achieved when I got handed my Bachelor degree.

Finally in 2015 I have come across a bright light that has finally let me achieve a foot in the door which is a stepping stone into the journey I want to reach in my life time.

I am learning all I need to know, it has seemed that my journey of life was meant to be to lead me where I am today. I have learnt many things along the way, from being a waitress which has taught me customer service techniques, to being multi tasked. Today I am learning the behind scenes of a photographers world and how to succeed.

Although it has taken me a long time to get from University to a job that actually fits my degree, I have lost my creative flow I use to have.

How do I reach my inner creative zone again?

Working full time focusing on certain techniques to stick to, but I am limited by my lack of creativity. I wish my brain would go back to the free flowing ideas I use to come up with in my sleep. Bring back those days where I couldn’t sleep because I always had creative ideas swirling in my head, now a days I can’t sleep due to stress over adult issues, such as stress, bills and other personal issues that arise.

I would prefer knowing that my brain was flowing with creativity then dealing with problems.

Does this happen regularly? can adults forget their spirit? their inner creative streak? If so can I get it back? I only wish I can, then maybe I will be happier within myself once again and achieve better newer ideas for future goals.

If you are one who can’t sleep because you have constant ideas, then do one thing for me… Keep them, write them down, draw them out, don’t lose them, use them. Trust me you don’t want to lose your creative mind, other wise life can become very dull…

Just keep that in mind!

Silhouettes – America’s Got Talent 2011

Silhouettes – America’s Got Talent 2011

The simple illusion of an easy art form seems to keep be wanting more. My inner child must be wanting to sit beside me and watch all the interesting transformations of what humans can do via their hands, body, incorporating other people and even making a pile of rubbish a shadow phenomenon.

Oh how childhood memories flash back of making stories by creating your own shadow hand puppets. The most common replicas would be a dog face and a rabbit.

Here are just a videos that enlightened me.

Only three simple things to perform such a amusing idea, a wall, light and hands to cast shadows. Many artists use shadow puppetry and the concept has also been applyed to some adverts aswell. There are a few groups as well who performed shadow art on America’s got talent.

Mini – exegesis to my creative project

•June 7, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Trying to figure out a concept to go with didn’t come to me as quicly as I hoped it would. I couldn’t decide either to great a schulpture or take photos or try something new for once. Erin Coates has inspired me from her art work and her way of life by trying new mediums. It is hard though to understand what medium to use when you don’t know what concept you are working with yet. A quote from the  reading, ‘the active imagination’ by Jung , “Sometimes active imagination takes place mainly inside the mind. Other times, the imagination is given form through painting, drawing, sculpting, dancing, writing, or on other ways.” (Jung, 1997 p.7) has helped me through my journey as I took time to rest and all of a sudden came an image in my head. This image has stuck in my head and I couldn’t get around it so I let it become my creative project.

My concept that I will be developing on is stereotypes in modern society. What is a stereotype exactly?

“A stereotype is used to catergorize a group of people. People don’t understand that type of person, so they put them into classifications, thinking that everyone who is that needs to be like that, or anyone who acts like their classifications is one.”  (Emily, 2004)

I am looking at how stereotypes are just a way of ‘understanding’ a differen culture even though stereotpes do not fit most of the people who are associated with a certain group for example a biker is considered a beefy guy who has a long white beard, rides a Harley and wears black leather vests. Most bikies aren’t all have this same appearance only a same minoroty share this appearance. Stereotypes can be insulting and it can hurt somones feelings because they could get picked on for not fitting in or they are different to other people. Stereotypes demonstrate that our society has no individuals, we are all apart of a certain stereotype whether we like it or not. This is where my creative project comes in as I am going to take some well known stereotype groups and turn them into individuals.

I have done some research on stereotypes and came across a youtube clip of a stereotype song. Even if I cringe and the crudeness it find it is a starting point to express that we all are individuals underneath the stereotype blanket.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxi4ge6eJKc

(Turner, 2007)

Another inspiration was Banksy, In the first lecture we where shown a variety of ‘creative’ images and Banksy’s  helicopter with a pink bow helped the process of my work.

(FGFan, 2008)

“According to research from C.N. McRae and others, stereotyping is a shortcut that enables us to confer order on our complex society.  The problem is that stereotyping leads to prejudice.  This is turn leads to discrimination.    All stereotyping is really is a simplified and standardized conception about the characteristics or expected behaviors of an identifiable group.  As a result, we develop generalized perceptions about people based upon such things as the color of their skin, style of dress, sex (oops, gender) and so on.  Stereotyping is all part of the process of perception which also involves such things as our sense of self-esteem and self-concept.  As a result, when we see certain groups or people, or individuals, we tend to take that shortcut that McRae etal. mentioned so that we can better order things in our minds.  Stereotyping no doubt serves a purpose at times, however, it is up to the individual to get to know either the other individual or members of that group to determine if their perceptions are correct.  The only way to do that obviously is to engage in communication with that person.  However, our perceptions and resultant stereotyping of the other may lead us to believe that we do not wish to communicate with the other(s).  It is at this point that such things as prejudice and discrimination enter into the picture .”  (OldHippieHatesNewAV, 2007)

This statement is exactly why I am doing this creative project, I want to shout out about how sterotyping is wrong and we are not the same. We are all individuals and have different associations with different objects and situations.

I began to think of just an image of a cowboy in a pink tutu and this is where it progressed from there. I decided on finding stereotypical pictures of the internet as this is the basis of what a stereotype actually ‘should’ be. From here I had to think how I will incorporate a tutu on this cowboy picture. I could have chosen to use photoshop, or a number of other options such as draw them, but I decided to make a hand made collaboration collage. When I found the best cowboy picture I had to associate it to something outside the stereotypical box and desided my cowboy will become a ballerina. Here I thought of another stereotypical group, bikies and did the same association as the cowboy. I thought A picture of Susan Boyle would be a good start. I also chose a Death metal band but have used Vader’s –  Death metal lyrics. I am mashing their lyrics with ‘Part of your world’ from ‘The Little Mermaid.’ This is to express how these stereotypical groups are individuals inside, it is suggesting that some cowboys may actually like ballet or do ballet. Some bikies may like listening to opera and Susan Boyle, and some death metal band enjoy classical music. The majority of stereotype groups don’t fit their stereotypes, only a minority do.

I have done all of these by hand because I beleive it give it more of a personal touch suggesting that not everyone is associated to a particular stereotype as people have different tastes and interests. This is due to the fact that we are not the same becasue of personal interest, knowledge, beleifs, our background and our culture. These images could of possibly turned out better in photoshop but I don’t have the skills in that particular software. I believe my collages have spoken out more clearly then if I did use photoshop. I thought uploading the collages as an image will give the viewer an opportunity to make up their own mind about what I have created. It is said a picture can describe a thousand words, hopefully a collage of a picture can express what I am trying to say in those thousand words. This is a serious topic in our society and I wanted to treat it kindly and try and not offend anyone.

Sorry for the late submission, please forgive me as my computer is very old and I am still on dial – up speed!! Which means a pain when trying to hand assignments in on time.

Creative project

I was having trouble deciding what to do for my creative project, but for some reason an image stuck in my head and I couldn’t move away from it so I continued with its concept. The image stuck in my head was a cowboy in a pink tutu. This lead me to my topic of stereotypes in our society.  I wanted it to be related to my studies about how I produce this visual piece and I though a collage would be a good way to start. Making collages in other units has helped me pick up skills to try and perfect the final outcome. I wanted it to look as close to my image in my head as I could. I documented my project by photography to get an image that will hopefully catch people’s eye and think about the concepts.

These are the original pictures that have helped me create my design before I took them apart and redesigned them in my stereotypical concept which will be explained in my exegesis. The pictures  and lyrics where found off the internet.

(Lasome, 2008)                                              (Karen, 2011)

I asked myself what would a stereotypical cowboy not go and see. A cowboy and a tutu! What could I come up with?

In today’s society we would think this is a very bizare concept of a cowboy liking ballet or knows ballet. In society though there actually maybe a ballet loving cowboy.

(Dave, 2011)                                                                                                 (Life & Gossip.com, 2009)

Another idea was a stereotypical biker and had to think of something they would never do. I thought Susan Boyle was a good choice.

My creation of a stereotypical bikie with a Susan Boyle tatoo. You wouldn’t call him a stereotypical bikie now would you?

From here I moved on to death metal stereotypes, but instead of using an image I found a song from a death metal band. I tried to think of what is the complete opposite musical group and I though classical. Not just any type of classical but Disney classical. I used the lyrics of the two and then mashed them together. I tried two different concepts in doing this. But first these are the lyrics before they where dismantled.

death metal- by Vader  lyrics  (Sorry if the words are jumbled up, I don’t know how to fix it : S  )

Arise from the dead and attack from the grave
The killing won’t stop until first light
We’ll bring you to hell because we want to enslave
Soul will be frozen with fright

We’ll break through the crust, leave from our crypts
Protected by eternal life
Lay down the laws from our satanic scripts
Bringing you nothing but strife

Death metal

Ruling your cities, controlling your towns
Entrapped in your worst nightmare
Piercing your ears with the horrible sound
Casting my elusive stare

Lucifer laughs, his needs are fulfilled
The Flames are now burning hot
( From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/v/vader-lyrics/death-metal-lyrics.html )
Bodies are burning, the people are killed
Torture the reason we fought

Death Metal

Kill Them Pigs

Now we take over and rule by death metal
Enjoy our long wanted reign
Blood’s what we want and we won’t settle
Until we drive you insane

Attacking the young and killing the old
Bleeding with every heart beat
Darkness has feelen and your soul is sold
Claws will dig into your meat

When the sun doesn’t rise and the day is like night
Know that your life is at its end
Rendered helpless so scream out fright
Death metal came in the wind
Death metal

Part of your world –  The Little Mermaid

Look at this stuff

Isn’t it neat?

Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?

Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl

The girl who has everything?

Look at this trove

Treasures untold

How many wonders can one cavern hold?

Lookin’ around here you’d think

(Sure) she’s got everything

I’ve got gadgets and gizmos aplenty

I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore

(You want thingamabobs?

I got twenty)

But who cares?

No big deal

I want more

I wanna be where the people are

I wanna see

Wanna see ’em dancin’

Walkin’ around on those

(Whad’ya call ’em?) oh – feet

Flippin’ your fins you don’t get too far

Legs are required for jumpin’, dancin’

Strollin’ along down a

(What’s that word again?) street

Up where they walk

Up where they run

Up where they stay all day in the sun

Wanderin’ free

Wish I could be

Part of that world

What would I give

If I could live

Outta these waters?

What would I pay

To spend a day

Warm on the sand?

Betcha on land

They understand

Bet they don’t reprimand their daughters

Bright young women

Sick o’ swimmin’

Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know

Ask ’em my questions

And get some answers

What’s a fire and why does it

(What’s the word?) burn?

When’s it my turn?

Wouldn’t I love

Love to explore that shore above?

Out of the sea

Wish I could be

Part of that world

 (Pilhofer, 1995)

This is my first attempt at changing the lyrics around. I had a secence where I would keep all of Vader’s lyrics but for every second line I would use every second lyric line in Part of your world. This is how it turned out to be, I tried to match it a bit more but trying to add the sentences together. Some of it work some of it didn’t this is how it went.

Arise from the dead and attack from the grave Isn’t it neat?

Death metal.

This is my second attempt, this time I took the most related words from Part of your World to try and fit them in with Vader. They don’t have any order they are just put in place to try and find lyrical sentences that work.

Arise from the dead and attack from the grave

I will explain more about why I chose this creative project in my exegesis.

Work example 3

From the beginning of high school I have been interested in poems, I quite enjoy writing them. It is a great away of expressing what you feel in a secretive manner. I have progressed my  poetic ability from when I have started which is always a good sign. Poems are a way of letting my thoughts and feeling come together in a piece that I can personally understand. It could also tell a different story to someone else who reads them. I will share 3 of my own poems because they all share differet sides of my myself. Some of these poems are produced through pure emotions while others are simple made by a creative explosion in my mind and I had to write them down.

Poem one:

A murder, a death, a suidide, a injury,

aren’t what we would like to fear.

A marriage a baby a kiss on the lips,

is what we would rather hear.

Our pain us brutal,

and jarder to control,

but we can’t guide our destiny.

We have to live on,

the further we go,

the more we have to guess our journey.

The further we travel,

the riskier it will become,

but let life take its toll.

Because what ever path,

we decide to  take,

is how we express our goal.

We need to show,

what is righfully ours,

before it all goes away.

Be brave and strong,

don’t show ’em your gun,

other wise you will be on your way.

Poem 2:

There was a girl,

who hated life,

no matter how hard she tried.

Her parents don’t love her,

she feels alone,

as guys will never stare upon her at all.

She lives in a castle,

with a noble stead,

and a napkin in awaiting.

As she always dreamt of her happy ending.

She was cursed upon an evil witch,

when she was first born.

To remain in this castle with no presence,

but the feeling of being torn.

She hardly spoke a sentence,

as she has scitzophrenia,

and no longer she can see.

She didn’t know if it was day or night,

even if the seasons had changed at all,

but she was stuck in this tower,

unless she fall.

She platted her hair,

which took three days to finish.

She had trouble finding the window,

which once showed her past.

Her fingers touched the large opening,

as she was ready at last.

She let her hair handover the side,

this would be her weight,

as she was fragile and thin she just couldn’t keep her strength.

She jumped out the opening,

falling like a kite.

Miss Rupunzel said one last thing ‘good bye cruel world’

before she suddenly died.

Poem 3:

Moments that we wait for,

may never come at all.

Waiting for something special,

what’s the point at all?

How can we make goals in life,

if not everything we succeed.

Why bring down our egos,

life is hard to believe.

Life will always bring you dramas,

that’s what life’s about.

But always enjoy the good in life,

that’s why we shouldn’t doubt.

Never predict the moment,

it could lead you down.

Always keep an open mind,

the more you won’t see a frown.

So don’t judge life,

because it may not turn out at all.

Just go day by day,

without predicting your life at all.

My second example of work is when I did studio work last year. I really enjoyed taking these pictures of my friends. The project was on ‘faces’ these are not all the ones I have handed in as the ones I am showing you are just some fun pictures that I thought looked alright. I do enjoy photography but on my own terms, I don’t like the pressure of getting a good photo in a sort amount of time. Oh well here are my pictures that I took.
